A Little Late On This But…

according to Arseblog who has a link to AS, a Spanish paper,  but we’ve apparently lodged a €23 million bid for Santi Cazorla of Málaga. granted I only used an online translator but suffice it to say it’s the usual back & forth in a transfer.  We’ve offered the €23 million, whilst Málaga wants us to pay the minimum release clause fee of  €45 million.

Now, I have to make a comment about release clauses here, because I see this a lot in threads & responses & Málaga’s position on a possible Cazorla move further perpetuates this myth that a minimum fee release clause is what the player’s sale price is, or should be.  This is not what a release clause that requires a fee is at all.

A minimum fee release clause simply means that if someone comes in & wants to pay whatever the release fee is, the club owning the player simply has to sell the player for that fee.  It’s a clause that triggers an automatic “release” when whatever the fee in the contract clause is, is met.  There’s no negotiation as it’s an automatic release & the player moves on subject to personal terms at that point.

However, the owning club can sell a player for a fee that they deem acceptable that can be much less the release clause fee, usually a current market evaluation of the player.  These release clauses are usually put in place & are set generally at double or triple what they think they could actually get for the player so as to potentially scare off possible buyers unless that buyer is willing to pay a premium fee for the player *Chelsea & Man City cough-cough*, *Real & Barcelona cough-cough*.

So, point being, Málaga is playing the extortion game pointing to the release clause hoping we’ll pay the premium price when our valuation of the player with our offer of €23 million is our offer based on what we think is his actual value or market price is.

Ok, had to get that off my chest because I see a lot of people pointing to release clauses & acting like that’s a player’s selling price, which isn’t.

Anyway, in the other “likely” signing of Nuri Sahin, in-cahoots-with-Madrid paper, Marca, originally said he’d moving to us on loan following Sp*rs dropping interest before the paper revised the release to saying that Sahin would just be moving to the Premier League.  So make of that what you will as that’s what lead to Arsène’s backtracking the other day with the “we haven’t signed somebody today, (emphasis mine)” comment.
