The Arsenal reserves, now officially a U21 outfit, played & defeated Bolton Wanderers yesterday, 3-1, after playing down a man for 75 minutes.  Gunner ‘ keeper, Damián Martínez was sent off in the 25th minute when fouling Bolton’s Chris Lester leading to a PK which the Wanderers’ Adam Blakeman converted.  Arsenal fought back with three second half goals from German, Thomas Eisfeld, and a brace from Conor Henderson, one of which was a PK for us as well.  Good to see Henderson back in action following his knee injury from last year which kept him out all last year.

The new reserves setup is a U21 league with allowance for four overage players.  Of the four overage players allowed in the matchday squad, a maximum of three can be outfield players & only one can be a goalkeeper.  Obviously, Arsenal, or any other team for that matter, are under no obligation to play any players over 21.  Arsenal will be in Group A for the upcoming U21 season, paired with:  Blackburn, Bolton, Everton, Norwich, Reading, West Brom and West Ham.  There are three groups comprising a total of 23 teams & the top two teams from each group along with the two best third-placed teams will advance to a knockout-style playoff in beginning in January.  Arsenal U21s will also participate in the NextGen Series, a Champions League-style youth tournament kicking off its inaugural competition this upcoming season.
